The Basque Development NGO Coordinator is a coalition of 80 Basque Development NGOs working in matters of international cooperation and education to drive social transformation. It was founded in 1988 by 11organisations to enhance cooperation, reflection, dialogue and collaboration among its partners to ensure efforts are coordinated, coherent and adequate.
The Basque Development NGO Coordinator and its partner organisations are governed by a common Code of Conduct that sets out the principles and values that guide our work.
Ourmission is to:
-Promote cooperation to bring together partner Development NGOs and, public and private institutions in order to elevate the quality of initiatives.
-Support partner development NGOs in their efforts and strengthen policies and technical capacity building.
-Act as an agent of social transformationat the local level in order to achieve global change.
For that purpose, we encourage active participation and critical debate regarding the relationship that exists between our patriarchal and neoliberal development model and poverty and inequality. We promote a culture of solidarity and advocate for the destruction of existing inequality structures in our community, and in the most vulnerable regions in the world. We provide forums for debate and reflection where common stances and criteria are determined. We also form alliances with other social movements that seek to accomplish the same objectives.
We advocate for participative democracy, independence, transparency, coherence and gender equality.
We strive for social justice and societal transformation under the paradigm of sustainable human development and gender equality—people’s lives and their dignity are at the heart of our policies. In the fight to eradicate poverty, inequality and exclusion, we have taken up the slogan Another world is possible, together with other social groups across the world.
We understand cooperation to be the collective efforts between the Basque Country and the most impoverished villages in the world to eliminate the barriers standing in the way of human development. The process is based on solidarity, reciprocity, selflessness and gratitude, and is not considered a mere financial transaction. We firmly believe that cooperation is a means to educate, sensitise and raise awareness about the mechanisms that hinder people’s and countries’ development.
The following are our main objectives:
-Strengthen the international cooperation sector and our organisation.
-Advocate for the Basque cooperation policy.
-Inform andinstil a sense of critical awareness among citizens.
We have been part of the Spanish Development NGO Coordinator since 1999 and we received the Ignacio Ellacuría Award for our outstanding contribution to development cooperation.
Testaments of our commitment to promote the Basque language include the Euskararen bidean certification in Araba and Bizkaia, and the Zerbitzua euskarazcertification in Gipuzkoa, all awarded by Bai Euskarari.
